2.19.25 | Men's Basketball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Despite a career-high 26-point effort from sophomore guard Zion Stanford, the Temple University men's basketball team fell to Charlotte in overtime, 78-72, on Wednesday afternoon at Halton Arena.
The Owls (14-13, 6-8 AAC) head to Birmingham on Sunday to face UAB in a rematch of the 2023-24 AAC Championship game. The 49ers (10-17, 3-11 AAC) have a bye this weekend and head to Tulane next Wednesday.
Stanford knocked down 9-of-15 from the field and all eight of his free-throw attempts, grabbed four rebounds and stole possession from Charlotte twice. He led the game in scoring.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither team led by more than 10, with the heated contest featuring 15 lead changes and 11 ties.
- After Aiden Tobiason sliced an early deficit to three at 14-11, Charlotte took a game-high 10-point edge at 23-13.
- The Owls closed the first half strong, using a 12-6 run to cut Charlotte's lead to four at 33-29 and retook the lead with an 8-0 run with 1:34 to go in the opening half. The Owls knocked down all five of their free-throw attempts in the 2:15 span.
- A Steve Settle III free throw wrapped up the first-half scoring with 30 seconds left, as Temple held a 39-38 halftime lead inside Halton Arena.
- The two squads continued to trade points and leads throughout the second half, as neither team held more than a one-possession edge.
- Stanford lifted the Owls to a 64-62 advantage after draining a pair of free throws, but the 49ers' Nik Graves countered with a 4-0 run to put Charlotte ahead.
- Aiden Tobiason knotted the score with a layup, and Stanford put the Owls ahead with less than a minute to go, but Charlotte ultimately tied the game with a dunk with just over 30 seconds remaining to force overtime.
- The 49ers opened overtime with a 3-pointer and built a 76-70 lead before Elijah Gray laid in a pair of points. Charlotte iced the game with a pair of free throws with 15 seconds to go, sealing a 78-72 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Stanford's 26 points topped his previous best of 25 against Holy Family. The Philadelphia native and West Catholic graduate has now posted 20-plus points in four games this season and five times during his collegiate career.
- Aiden Tobiason reached double digits with 14 points (6-of-11 FG). The former Delaware Player of the Year has totaled at least 14 points in three of his past six outings. He scored 10 of his 14 points in the first half, making 4 of 5 attempts to start the contest.
- Steve Settle III led the Owls in rebounds with six. The redshirt senior transfer has now posted double-figure scoring efforts in eight consecutive contests and nine of the past 10.
- AAC leading scorer Jamal Mashburn Jr. was ruled out for the third time in the past four contests. The Miami, Fla., native was sidelined due to a lower-body injury. Mashburn Jr. – the nation's second-leading scorer – is considered day-to-day.
- Temple has gone to overtime in four of its past seven games, holding a 2-2 record. The two squads reached overtime in both regular-season meetings, with the home team earning the victory. It marks the first time Temple has played an opponent multiple times in overtime in the same season since the Owls and South Florida went to extra time twice in 2018-19.
- All 14 of Temple's AAC contests have been decided by nine points or fewer. The 14-game streak of playing nine consecutive games decided by less than 10 points is a program record for the Owls.
- The game was originally scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff, but forecasted inclement weather forced a 3 p.m. start inside Halton Arena.
Up Next
- Temple closes its two-game road swing on Sunday, heading to UAB in a rematch of The American championship game from a season ago.
- The Owls and Blazers will meet at 2 p.m. ET inside Bartow Arena in a nationally-televised matchup on ESPNU.
