Gary's Hot Shooting Leads Owls Past Wichita State

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's basketball (16-10, 10-5 AAC) beat the Wichita State Shockers (9-19, 3-12 AAC), 70-51, Wednesday evening at The Liacouras Center in front of 1,392 fans. Leading scorer Tarriyonna Gary had 25 points, shooting 9-15 from the field and 7-10 from beyond the arc. This game marked the most threes Gary has made since Florida Atlantic on 3/4/24.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
- Tarriyonna Gary scored the first basket of the game with a top-of-the-key three, 13 seconds into the quarter.
- On the next possession, Jaleesa Molina grabbed a steal and followed with a layup, giving the Owls an early five-point lead.
- Wichita responded with an 8-0 run lasting over two minutes, giving them a three-point lead, 8-5, at the 5:56 mark.
- Before the 3:38 media timeout, Temple outscored Wichita 6-2 over a two-minute span with four points from Anissa Rivera and two more from Kaylah Turner.
- Temple closed the quarter on an 8-0 run, capped off by a mid-range jumper from Tiarra East as the clock expired. Temple led, 18-10.
Second Quarter
- Tristen Taylor opened the second quarter with a floater, extending, Temple's lead to double digits, 20-10, with 9:13 remaining.
- Strong defensive plays from the Owls held the Shockers from scoring for two minutes into the second quarter.
- Wichita State started to reclaim some traction in the game, with three different scorers bringing it within four, 20-16.
- Aside from a pair of free throws from Turner, the teams traded empty possessions until the media timeout with 4:28 on the clock.
- The Shockers kicked off action after the timeout with an uncontested three from Taylor Jameson, followed by two makes from Salese Blow, giving them the lead, 23-22.
- After being in a scoring drought for over five minutes, Gary made her second three of the game, tying the score, 25-25, with 41 seconds left in the half.
- Wichita State's Anderson drilled a three to close out the half, 28-25.
Third Quarter
- Gary scored the first basket of the second half, tying the game and leading to a 7-0 run, ended by a layup from Wichita State's Jayla Murray. Temple led, 33-30.
- With no team scoring for 1:30 minutes, Turner grabbed a defensive rebound, carried the ball down the court, and pulled up from mid-range to end the drought.
- On the next possession, Turner reached double figures (12) after nailing a three. The Owls led, 38-33, at the 5:24 mark.
- Before the five-minute media timeout, Turner grabbed the Owls' second steal of the game, throwing the ball ahead for Molina, who scored a layup.
- Temple's 9-0 run, led by Turner's four points and a dagger corner three from Gary, forced the Shockers to reset with a timeout, 44-33, with 3:16 left in the quarter.
- The momentum could not be stopped, with the Owls continuing their offensive onslaught with 10 more unanswered points coming out of the timeout.
- Despite a layup from Wichita's Princess Anderson, Temple was not slowed as they went on a 21-2 run to enter the fourth quarter, 56-35.
Fourth Quarter
- Wichita State's Anderson scored the first basket in the final period, cutting into Temple's lead, 56-40, at the 8:40 mark.
- The teams traded two possessions each before a media timeout, which allowed both teams to reset before the final stretch of the game.
- The Shockers continued to fight, but Temple responded to every basket, 66-51, with two minutes left in the game.
- Gary scored the last bucket of the game, with the Owls extending their lead to 19, 70-51.
INSIDE THE BOX
- Temple out-rebounded Wichita State 21-20 in the first half. This is the third consecutive game Temple has out-rebounded its opponent in the first half.
- The Shockers had 16 points in the paint in the first half to Temple's 4.
