Women's Tennis Falls to Tulsa in AAC Championship Opener

MEMPHIS, TN. - Temple women's tennis opened its American Athletic Conference Championship run Wednesday morning against nationally ranked No. 43 Tulsa but came up short, falling 4-0 in Memphis.

How It Happen

The Golden Hurricane took the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Marianthi Christoforidou and Thamara Kawaratani were dealt a 6-2 loss by #43 Berlanga/Hutchings, while Maria Martinez and Martyna Mackiewicz dropped their match 6-3 on court two.
Tulsa secured the sweep behind straight-set victories on courts two, five, and one in singles. Mariana Manyoma Velasquez defeated Christoforidou 6-1, 6-1, and Erin McKenzie added another point with a 6-0, 6-3 result over Martinez. #86 Maria Berlanga Bandera clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-1 win over freshman Irmak Ozturk.
Despite unfinished battles on the remaining courts, the Owls showed grit. Kelly Richter took the first set 6-2 at No. 3 before play was halted in the second. Kawaratani was also pushing for a third set, trailing 5-4 in the second, while Mackiewicz held a 2-1 lead in the second set after dropping the first.
