Opening Tip

  • Winners of nine of their past 11 contests, the Temple University men's basketball team returns to the Liacouras Center on Wednesday night, seeking a season sweep of Charlotte at 7 p.m.
  • The Owls are coming off a pair of wins in Texas, defeating Rice 69-65 in Houston and UTSA 70-64 in San Antonio.
  • Against UTSA on Saturday, the Owls faced a 23-13 deficit with 11:12 remaining in the first half, cutting the Roadrunners' lead to two at the break. Temple scored 17 of the first 20 points of the second half to build a 12-point advantage. UTSA pulled within one at 51-50 with 8:20 to play, but Temple maintained the lead the rest of the way to secure the 70-64 victory.
  • Derrian Ford was named to the conference's weekly honorable mention list after averaging 18.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. He shot 13-for-30 from the field and 8-for-9 at the foul line, and recorded his 1,000th career point on a driving layup that lifted the Owls to a 65-58 lead with 1:04 remaining.
  • The Owls look to respond at the Liacouras Center after a rare home loss in their last matchup, a 79-73 decision against Florida Atlantic. Temple is 20-4 at home over the past two seasons.
  • After ranking last in the conference and 314th nationally in scoring defense at 77.7 points per game allowed in 2024-25, Temple now ranks second in the league and 71st nationally, allowing 69.4 points per game. The Owls also rank among the league leaders in blocks per game (4.8), which ranks third in the conference and 35th nationally.
Scouting Charlotte
  • The 49ers enter Wednesday's matchup with an 11-9 overall record and a 5-2 conference mark, tied with Temple, Tulsa and South Florida for second place in the league.
  • Since Temple's 76-73 win in the Queen City on Dec. 30 in the conference opener, Charlotte has posted a 5-1 record and has won consecutive games over East Carolina and Tulane by 73-70 scores.
  • Charlotte features strong depth, ranking second in the league in bench points per game (28.85) while ranking third in field goal percentage (46.0) and fourth in 3-point percentage (35.7).
  • Ben Bradford leads Charlotte with 14.2 points per game.
  • Dezayne Mingo ranks fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.37) and sixth in assists (83), also averaging double-figures in points with 11.2 per game.
  • Anton Bonke is a force on the glass at 8.1 rebounds per game. He totaled 20 points in the first meeting between teams this season.
All-Time Series
  • Temple leads the all-time series, 12-7.
  • The Owls hold a 3-2 edge since Charlotte joined the conference prior to the 2023-24 season and hold a 7-1 advantage in North Philadelphia.
  • In the first meeting this season on Dec. 30, the Owls led 75-67 with 48 seconds remaining before Charlotte knocked down two 3-pointers and forced a turnover to cut the lead to two with 16 seconds to play. Jordan Mason extended the margin to three with a free throw, and Charlotte missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds. Mason posted a season-high 18 points, while Ford (17), Tobiason (15) and Griffiths (13) all reached double-figures.
