Opening Tip

  • Following a tough overtime loss to Charlotte on Wednesday evening, the Temple University men's basketball team looks to bounce back in a big way on Saturday night against South Florida. The annual "White Out" contest will tip off at 8 p.m. on ESPN2 from the Liacouras Center.
  • Temple fell in overtime to Charlotte, 80-76, on Wednesday night at the Liacouras Center, as the 49ers forced the extra session on a game-tying layup at the buzzer. The 49ers trailed 63-54 with 6:29 left, closing the second half with a 14-5 run to force overtime.
  • Temple shot 27-of-29 from the free-throw line against the 49ers, making its final 23 attempts of the evening. The Owls' 93.1% free-throw percentage was their best mark since Jan. 13, 2024. It marked Temple's best free-throw percentage when making at least 27 free throws since Dec. 22, 2016, when the Owls went 28-of-30 in an 83-77 win over Yale at the Liacouras Center.
  • The Owls were missing Gavin Griffiths, who was ruled out with a lower-body injury. He remains day-to-day. Griffiths is averaging 15.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.42 blocks in seven American Conference games.
  • The Owls committed just six turnovers in the 45-minute contest, marking the fifth time this season the Owls have turned the ball over six times or fewer. Temple entered the game ranked 10th nationally in fewest turnovers per game and now ranks seventh.
  • Despite the loss, the Owls remain a single game back of first place in the league. Tulsa, Florida Atlantic, South Florida and Charlotte have identical 6-2 records in conference play, while Temple is tied with Wichita State at 5-3.

Scouting South Florida

  • The Bulls enter Saturday night tied for first place in the American Conference with a 14-7 overall record and a 6-2 league mark. South Florida has won three consecutive games, with its conference losses against UAB (109-106, 2OT) and Wichita State (86-85, OT) both coming in overtime.
  • South Florida leads the conference in scoring (90.1 ppg, 10th nationally), rebounds (43.57 rpg, third nationally), offensive rebounds (15.76 per game, second nationally), free-throw attempts (28.7 per game, second nationally) and free throws made (21.0 per game, second nationally).
  • The Bulls use a balanced offense with all five starters averaging between 12.1 and 15.4 points per game. Izaiyah Nelson leads the conference at 10.1 rebounds per game (14th nationally) and shoots 58.6% from the floor (38th nationally), while CJ Brown leads the league with 5.4 assists per game (49th nationally). Wes Enis ranks sixth nationally in 3-point attempts (189) and seventh in 3-pointers made per game (3.63).
  • USF is under the direction of first-year head coach Bryan Hodgson, who spent the previous two seasons at Arkansas State. Temple's Derrian Ford played for Hodgson in Jonesboro the previous two seasons, with Hodgson guiding the Red Wolves to a 45-28 record, two Sun Belt title game appearances, along with CBI and NIT selections.
