10.30.26 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - For the second time in its last three games, the Temple University field hockey team came out on top in a shootout, defeating Providence, 4-3, in its BIG EAST and home finale Friday afternoon at Howarth Field.

Lucia Magro, Kathryn Gauvin and Mathea Lassalle each converted their shootout attempts, while goalkeeper Alex Lepore turned away Providence's final three chances to secure the victory.

With the win, Temple improves to 7-10 overall and 2-4 in BIG EAST play, while Providence falls to 10-7 and 2-4 in conference action.

Magro, Gauvin and Rozlyn Maciejewski each scored during regulation for the Owls. Magro added an assist for a three-point afternoon, while Riley Gallagher also recorded an assist. Lepore made eight saves, including four in the fourth quarter.

How It Happened

Providence generated the early pressure, earning three penalty corners in the opening quarter, but Lepore made a pair of saves to keep the game scoreless. Temple came close to opening the scoring with 6:12 remaining when Emmie Goldberg's attempt struck the post.

The Owls broke through with 2:03 remaining before halftime. Gallagher set up Magro for her team-leading eighth goal of the season, giving Temple a 1-0 advantage.

Temple doubled the lead just 1:10 later. The Owls earned a penalty corner with 57 seconds remaining, and Gauvin finished a feed from Magro four seconds later for her fifth goal of the season, sending Temple into halftime ahead, 2-0.

Providence erased the deficit quickly after the break. With 13:37 remaining in the third quarter, Macie Pennisi converted off a penalty corner with assists from Martu Torre Festa and Johanna Mahner.

Just 24 seconds later, Lepore stopped an initial attempt from Bo Martina, but Lily Procaccianti finished the ensuing opportunity to even the game at 2-2.

Temple regained the lead with 7:06 remaining in the fourth quarter following a sustained stretch of pressure. The Owls earned three consecutive penalty corners before Mathea Lassalle had a shot blocked and Ava Porter made back-to-back saves on Isabella Pisano and Brooke Weaver. Maciejewski then finished the loose ball for her sixth goal of the season and a 3-2 Temple advantage.

Providence pulled Porter for an extra field player with 4:57 remaining and found the equalizer with exactly one minute left. Lepore made consecutive saves on Martina and Procaccianti following a penalty corner, but Martina converted the ensuing chance to send the game to overtime tied at 3-3.

Gauvin produced the first shot on goal of overtime with 9:23 remaining, forcing a save from Porter. Providence nearly ended the game with eight minutes left when Martina's attempt struck the post.

Lepore turned away Pennisi with 7:06 remaining before Temple earned a penalty corner of its own. Magro put a shot on cage with 4:19 left, but Porter made the stop. Gauvin had the final chance of overtime with 30 seconds remaining, sending her attempt wide to force a shootout.
Magro opened the shootout by converting Temple's first attempt before Saar Koper answered for Providence.

After Porter denied Maura Simpson, Lepore stopped Charlotte Lorden. Gauvin then converted to put Temple back in front before Lepore denied Johanna Mahner.

Porter stopped Marissa Cagliola on Temple's fourth attempt, but Lepore answered by turning away Pennisi for her third consecutive stop. Lassalle then converted Temple's fifth attempt to seal the victory.
