Opening Tip

  • Following consecutive losses to Tulane and North Texas, the Temple University men's basketball team looks to get back on track Wednesday night when it hosts the UAB Blazers at the Liacouras Center. The Owls return home aiming to defend their floor against a UAB squad that owns the American's best conference road record, with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m. on ESPNU.
  • Temple dropped a 65-62 decision to North Texas on Sunday after leading 28-22 at halftime and building a 12-point advantage early in the second half before the Mean Green responded with a decisive 15-0 run to seize control in the final 10 minutes.
  • Masiah Gilyard matched his season high with 16 points, drilling a career-best four three-pointers, while Derrian Ford recorded his 11th 20-point performance of the season. Aiden Tobiason added 12 points, and Gavin Griffiths tied his career high with nine rebounds in the narrow setback.
  • Despite holding North Texas to 27.6% shooting in the first half and connecting on five three-pointers before the break, Temple was unable to overcome late free throws and a final corner attempt that fell short in the closing seconds.
  • The Owls will now look to regroup on their home floor Wednesday night as they prepare for a key conference matchup against UAB.

Scouting UAB

  • Entering Wednesday, UAB has won two of its last three games, earning victories over Rice (71-65) and Tulsa (68-63) before a narrow 55-54 loss to Tulane on Sunday. The Blazers have been dominant away from home, posting a 7-2 overall road record and a perfect 6-0 mark in conference road games, the best in the American.
  • UAB has made its mark on the glass, ranking second in the conference and 11th nationally with 41.3 rebounds per game. The Blazers also lead the league in fastbreak scoring (15.8 ppg), rank third in assists (14.0 apg), and sit first in the conference and sixth nationally in turnovers committed, averaging just nine per contest.
  • Sophomore Chance Westry leads the way offensively, pacing the team in scoring (14.6 ppg) and assists (4.7 apg) while ranking second on the squad in steals (1.3). He stands second in the American in assists per game and leads the conference with a 2.67 assist-to-turnover ratio.
  • UAB features one of the top rebounding trios in the league in Evan Chatman (9.1 rpg), Daniel Rivera (7.0 rpg), and Kyeron Lindsay-Martin (6.5 rpg), who rank third, sixth, and seventh in the conference, respectively.
  • The Blazers hold a 4-3 edge in the all-time series and has won the last three meetings, including an 80-64 victory in Birmingham last season and an 85-69 win in the 2024 American Conference Championship Game.
