GOLDEN RIVER, Calif. - The Temple University men's crew team picked up multiple wins over nationally-recognized teams on the opening day of IRA National Championships on Friday. The 17th-ranked varsity eight boat finished fourth in its preliminary heat, while the No. 18 second varsity eight closed in fifth. Both crews advanced to the C/D semifinals on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Squaring off against Philadelphia rival Drexel in the opening heat of the top varsity eight competition, the Owls picked up an impressive victory over the Dragons, who entered the competition ranked 16th nationally, while also crossing in front of Oregon State.
The time of 5:52.580 was good for 16th overall in the field of 24, faster than Drexel, No. 15 Columbia, and No. 18 Georgetown.
In the second varsity eight's race, the Owls defeated UC San Diego while crossing in a time of 6:02.92.
The top boat for Temple will race out of lane one in its semifinal heat, while the second varsity will row out of lane three.
