Fran Brown was one of four coaches retained by head coach Rod Carey on his initial staff in 2019. Brown will enter his seventh season at Temple and first since returning from Baylor.
Brown was the Bears' assistant head coach and was widely known as the staff's best recruiter and also worked with the cornerbacks. He was named a Top 10 recruiter by 24/7 Sports.
Previously at Temple, Brown spent four seasons coaching the cornerbacks. In 2015, Brown's squad of corners was led by senior Tavon Young and sophomore Sean Chandler. Chandler was a second-team All-American Athletic Conference selection, recording four interceptions that season, including two that he took back for touchdowns. Brown also recruited and worked with future NFL players such as: P.J. Walker, Nate Hairston, Haason Reddick, Jullian Taylor, Sharif Finch, Jacob Martin, and Ryquell Armstead.Â
In 2014, Brown's unit shined due to the play of Young and Chandler. Young earned All-American Athletic Conference honors with four interceptions and a conference-best 153 return yards. Chandler, who like Brown attended Camden High, joined the starting unit immediately as a true freshman and helped transform Temple's unit coming off a disappointing 2013 season.
The most dramatic improvement in Temple's defense came in the passing game where the unit shaved off over 100 yards per game from the previous year. In 2014, the unit allowed just 186.9 yards per game after allowing 298.6 the previous year. The Owls allowed just nine scoring passes after 24 in 2013.Â
  Â
In 2014, Rivals.com named Brown one of the top recruiters in the American Athletic Conference in part because of his recruitment of Chandler.
Brown received his bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Western Carolina University in 2006. Playing under assistant head coach Matt Rhule and defensive coordinator Geoff Collins, the team captain was a first-team All-SoCon selection at cornerback for the Catamounts.Â
  Â
Following graduation, Brown had two short stays with the Cincinnati Bengals during the 2007 and 2008 seasons.Â
Brown was a three-time All-Conference quarterback at Camden High School, setting the school record with 47 touchdown passes.
Brown comes back to Philadelphia with his high school sweetheart, Teara, and their two children, Fran Jr. and Brayden.
