Jim Maloney
- Title:
- Men's Basketball Coach
Temple basketball has enjoyed national prominence over the years and Jim Maloney played an important role in the Owls' success. Considered one of basketball's finest strategists, he coached at Temple from 1973 until his untimely death on May 3, 1996. He was an assistant coach at Temple under both Don Casey and John Chaney and also assisted Lefty Driesell at Maryland. During his career, he developed outstanding guards like Eddie Jones, Aaron McKie, Mark Macon, Rick Brunson, Terence Stansbury, Nate Blackwell, and Howie Evans. While head coach at Niagara, he tutored Calvin Murphy.
Maloney helped Temple and Maryland get to 23 post-season tournaments, 17 NCAA and 6 NIT. "Jim was one of the nation's finest coaches," said Chaney. As a player, Maloney finished as the eighth all-time leading scorer at Niagara where he received both his bachelor's and master's degrees.
