East Park Canoe House
HOME OF TEMPLE MEN'S CREW AND WOMEN'S ROWING
The East Park Canoe House rehabilitation was selected as a 2017 Grand Jury Award winner by the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia. The Preservation Achievement Awards are presented to a select group of individuals, organizations and businesses for projects throughout the region which exemplify outstanding achievement in the field of historic preservation.
The rehabilitation of the Canoe House began in April 2015 and Temple University moved their sculls back into the Canoe House in November 2016. The improvements included updates to the building's exterior, renovations to the office and storage spaces, new locker rooms and updates to the public restrooms. There is also a new public dock at the facility, which was funded through Temple University and members of the Philadelphia Rowing and Regatta communities.
The total cost of the project was $5 million. SMP Architects were the lead design consultants on the Canoe House, with Murphy Quigly leading construction on the project. Additional consultants and contractors included, Heritage Design Collaborative, BHG Consulting, Mulhern Electric Company, Dolan Mechanical and General Asphalt Paving of Philadelphia.
Temple University's rowing and crew teams and the Philadelphia Police Marine Unit will occupy the newly restored Canoe House.
