Miriam Michener Guiley
- Induction:
- 1985
- Class:
- 1937
It may be difficult to put her lifelong commitment to athletics, which began in 1933 when Temple's women's teams were "Honor Teams." Miriam Michener Guiley was a member of the Cherry and White's field hockey, baseball, basketball and track squads. Her "commitment to athletics" carried through many years and a variety of sports. Post-graduation, she continued to play field hockey for 18 years. Besides coaching most of the club teams she played with, she coached several different sports on the high school level. She was responsible for organizing and coaching Franklin and Marshall College's first varsity field hockey team in 1973. Her officiating background is as varied as her coaching background. A member of the Umpire and Selection Committee, she was a field hockey official for 34 years, a basketball referee for 17 years, a gymnastics judge for nine years and a softball umpire for six years. She was also given credit for introducing the game of field hockey to Central Pennsylvania at a time when it was only played in the eastern section of the state.
