Temple To Host 17th Annual Murphy Cup Regatta

(Apr. 12, 1999) -- Temple University will host the 17th annual Murphy Cup Regatta this Saturday, April 17, on the Schuykill River in Philadelphia, Pa. Races will begin at 12 noon and will conclude at approximately 5:30 p.m.
Men's and women's crews from 20 institutions will compete for the coveted Murphy Cup, named in honor of John Murphy, a former Temple oarsman who was tragically killed by a hit and run driver in 1981.
The Temple men's varsity eight crew, ranked No. 10 in the USRowing Collegiate Coaches Poll, will look to defend its title after capturing first place with a time of 5:51.76 in 1998. Villanova is the returning champion in the women's varsity eight competition, after rowing to victory in a time of 6:54.5 last year.
