Towson Wins Women's National Invitational Tournament Title

PHILADELPHIA (April 18, 1999) -- The Towson (Maryland) University women's gymnastics team collected the championship of the 1999 USA Gymnastics Women's National Invitational Tournament conducted today at Temple University's McGonigle Hall in Philadelphia.

Coach Dick Filbert's Tigers scored a meet total of 194.00 points to edge second place Rutgers, which finished with a total of 193.875. Bowling Green finished third with a total of 193.50, host Temple was fourth at 190.125, UC Santa Barbara was fifth at 190.000 and Western Michigan finished sixth with 189.475.

Towson was led by sophomore Niina Parjanen and senior Kim Yenco, who tied for second in the all-around with scores of 38.975. Parjanen also won the vault with a score of 9.875 and was fifth in the uneven parallel bars at 9.825. Yenco took a fifth in the floor exercise (9.850) and was sixth in both the uneven parallel bars (9.800) and vault (9.700). Senior Liane Williams added thirds in the floor exercise (9.875) and uneven parallel bars (9.850).

Freshman Marny Oestreng of Bowling Green was the individual standout of the meet, winning the overall with a composite score of 39.325, including a first in the floor exercise (9.925), and seconds in the uneven bars (9.875) and vault (9.750). Additional individual event winners included senior Alison Giorgetti of UC Santa Barbara in the balance beam (9.850) and sophomore Dawn Campbell of Rutgers in the uneven parallel bars (9.925).
