Temple Receives Recommendation to Host Men's 2000 NCAA East Regional

PHILADELPHIA (July 12, 1999) -- The Temple University Department of Intercollegiate
Athletics has been informed by NCAA Men's Division I Golf Committee that
it will receive the committee's recommendation to host the 2000 East
Regional Tournament at Glenmaura National Golf Club in Moosic, PA. The
competition is scheduled for May 18-20, 2000, with final approval of the
site to be announced when the NCAA Division I Championship/Competition
Cabinet meets on Sept. 14.
"We are thrilled with the decision of the committee," said Temple
Director of Athletics Dave O'Brien. "The administration at Glenmaura
National has done a tremendous job in expressing its wish to host this
prestigious competition and the course is top rate. We believe the NCAA,
the University, the Atlantic 10 Conference and the Glenmaura National
Golf Club will all benefit from this effort."
Designed by Architect Dr. Michael Hurdzan and the home of touring
professional Larry Mize, the championship course at Glenmaura National
Golf Club is rated at 74.8 from the back tees, has a slope rating of 144
and a par score of 71. It has served as the host site for the
Pennsylvania State Mid-Amateur, Senior Amateur and Girls' Junior
Amateur, in addition to NCAA Division III Tournaments and the local high
school district finals. After just six years of operation, its is
already ranked among the top 10 courses in the state of Pennsylvania. It
was also ranked among the national top 10 of Golf Digest Magazine's
best new courses in 1995.
The largest of three regional qualifying tournaments to the NCAA
Championships, the 2000 East Regional will include 120 participants (23
teams, five individuals) vying for 57 positions (11 teams, two
individuals) of advancement to the national finals. The overall regional
field includes 137 Division I schools, located in 19 eastern states:
Maine, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island,
Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia,
Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia
and Florida.
