Men's Soccer Defeats Duquesne for Third Straight Win
10.27.00 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA - Junior Matt Kaufman scored off an assist from sophomore
Mike Zimmerman at the 11:27 mark of the first extra period to give the
Temple University men's soccer team a 2-1 overtime win over visiting
Atlantic 10 Conference foe Duquesne today at Temple Stadium.
The victory marked a third-straight win for the Owls and first-year
head coach Dave MacWilliams, as Temple improved to 4-11-0 on the season
and 3-6-0 in A-10 Conference play. Last week, Temple snapped an 11-match
drought with conference wins at La Salle (3-0 on Oct. 20) and Fordham
(2-0 on Oct. 22). With the loss, Duquesne fell to 7-9-2 overall and
4-4-1 in conference play.
"We're finally getting some consistent scoring," said MacWilliams,
who's team will conclude its 2000 season in a home match versus St.
Bonaventure on Sunday (Temple Stadium, 1:00 p.m.). "We've scored seven
goals in the last three games and we scored just six in the previous 11.
I sure wish we could have another crack at the five overtime games we
lost."
The Owls and Dukes traded goals midway through the second half to force
the overtime period. Duquesne broke a scoreless tie at the 27:31 mark,
when sophomore midfielder Steve Olivarez netted an assist from senior
Matt Legge. Temple answered less that three minutes later, when junior
forward Angelo DiCarlo broke the Dukes interior defense for a
single-handed goal at 24:52. Temple finished with an 18-11 advantage in
shots on goal, while freshman goalkeeper Cornelius Murphy contributed
eight saves for the Owls.
