Men's Soccer Closes Season With 3-2 Win Over St. Bonaventure

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple men's soccer team closed out its 2000 season,
the first under new head coach Dave MacWilliams, in style this
afternoon, posting a 3-2 Atlantic 10 Conference win over visiting St.
Bonaventure at Temple Stadium.
For Temple (5-11-0, 4-6-0 A-10), the win marked a fourth-straight
victory to finish the season on a high note. Prior to a 3-0 win at La
Salle on Oct. 20, the Owls had dropped 11 consecutive matches after
winning the season opener over Drexel Sept. 2. St. Bonaventure ended its
season with an overall mark of 6-12-0 and an A-10 record of 4-6-0.
Playing against a stiff and steady wind in the first half, Temple
nonetheless broke on top, scoring the game's first two goals. Junior
mid-fielder Angelo Di Carlo broke a scoreless tie at the 25:55 mark of
the first period scoring off an assist from junior Matt Kaufman. DiCarlo
would go on to add two assists of his own in the contest. Just over
seven minutes later, Temple increased its lead to 2-0, when DiCarlo
passed to freshman Matt Moran for a goal at the 18:38 mark. St.
Bonaventure rallied to even the match before the half, as freshman Nick
Blair scored off an assist from senior Sean Kelty at the 11:05 mark,
followed by an unassisted goal by Kelty on a free kick at the 5:00 mark.
Temple played with the wind in the second half and maintained pressure
on the Bonnies throughout the period. Junior mid-fielder Jeff Fisher
scored what would eventually stand as the match winner at the 22:47
mark, as DiCarlo once again provided the assist. For the game, Temple
out-shot the visiting Bonnies 21-14. Freshman goalkeeper Cornelius
Murphy keyed the Owl defensive effort with eight saves.
