St. John's Captures Temple Owl Invitational Golf Tournament

MOOSIC, PA (October 8) - Behind a one-under-par performance by junior Andrew Svoboda, the St. John's University men's golf team won the 14-team Temple Owl Invitational Golf Tournament, played Oct. 6-7 at Glenmaura National Golf Club.

Coach Frank Darby's Red Storm, which entered the final round trailing first-round leader William & Mary by an eight strokes (296-304), won the 36-hole event over runner-up Central Connecticut State, 596-602. Seton Hall finieshed third at 603, William & Mary was fourth at 605 and Princeton was fifth at 610.

St. John's placed two additional players among the top 20 individual finishers, including junior Jesse Fitzgerald (5th at 147) and junior Joe Saladino (tied for 13th at 151). John DeForest, who finished 30th in the field of 69 players at 157, completed the St. John's scoring.

Svoboda, who carded a two-over par 73 in the first round, fired the tournament's low score of three-under-par 68 in the final round. His performance was marked by consistency, as he posted 29 pars over the two-day event. Freshman Michael Welch of Central Connecticut State finished as the individual runner-up with a 36-hole total of 145, which included an even-par 71 in the final round. Junior James Milam of Princeton and freshman Jay Allaghi of Seton Hall tied for third at 146.

Mike Bosica of St. Joseph's (Philadelphia) dropped a hole-in-one on the 167-yard ninth hole in the second round. It was the first ace in competition for the sophomore out of Baltimore Loyola High School. Bosica finished 56th in the field with a 36-hole total of 166.
