Temple Topples Marist To Move To 2-0
11.21.00 | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - Lisa Jakubowicz (15), Stacey Smalls (12), Regan Apo (11) and Christena Hamilton (11) were the double figure scorers as the Temple women's basketball team moved their record to 2-0 on the season with a 77-57 win over Marist Tuesday night at the Liacouras Center.
In a game where 61 personal fouls were called, the Temple defense kept Marist at bay throughout the contest. The Red Foxes shot just 17.4 percent from the field in the first half and shot under 27 percent (26.8, a Liacouras Center record) for the game. The Owls also forced 28 Marist turnovers and had 15 steals as a team. In contrast, Temple shot 44.8 percent from the field and 50 percent from three point range. However, for head coach Dawn Staley, who saw her team put up 89 points in the season opener, the final score was not as important as dictating the pace of the game. "The score does not prepare us for the tougher games ahead but the situations do," said Staley. "Tempo of the game is the key to our success," she added.
First year sophomore Christine Cruz did not quite reach double figures but her statistics were impressive. Cruz had nine points, nine rebounds and a game-high five steals in 24 minutes of action. Hamilton, a freshman, was perfect from the field (5-5) and from the line (1-1) before fouling out. Jakubowicz, last year's scoring leader returned to form with her team-high 15 points.
So, for Temple it has been two up and two down on the schedule. Next up, Rider (Monday, November 27 at 7:00 p.m.) in their first road game of the season. In fact, the Owls do not return to the nest until after Christmas vs. Iona (Wednesday, December 27 at 7:00 p.m.)
