Philadelphia, Pa. (November 8)- The Temple University women's basketball
season officially got under way from the Liacouras Center as the Owls defeated
the Asker Lady Aliens 90-41 in an exhibition matchup. The game marked the
debut of Owls' head coach Dawn Staley, fresh off her gold medal performance at
the 2000 Olympic Games. Five Owls pitched in double-digit games as a
high-paced attack proved too much for the visiting Lady Aliens to handle as
the Owls never trailed.
Temple opened up a 32-8 lead over the Aliens to begin the game. Owls' guard
Natalia Isaac led all scorers at intermission with 11 points. The home team
went to the locker room with a 20-point lead, 49-29. Staley and her team
returned to the court in the second half and went on a 23-2 run extending the
lead to 72-31 at the 11:00 mark. The visitors committed 32 turnovers and were
held to 12 points in the second half. Asker did not score their first field
goal until the 5:10 mark against a stifling Owls defense.
Sophomore forward Christine Cruz exploded in the second half for 16 points,
she ended the day with 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Guard Regan
Apo was the Owls second leading scorer with 14 points and center Lisa
Jakubowicz added 11 rebounds. Asker center Nanna Sand paced the Lady Aliens
with 13 points and six rebounds.
