Bronx, N.Y. (Feb. 20) - The Temple women's basketball team came from behind to beat Fordham, 62-57, today, at the Rose Hill Gymnasium.
The Owls struggled at the start of the contest and trailed the Rams, 25-11 at halftime. However, the second half was a different story. Trailing by as many as 17 points early in the second stanza, the Owls went on a 15-3 scoring run, capped by a pair of made free throws by senior Kim Martin, to cut the Fordham lead to five points with 16:28 remaining. However, Fordham would extend the lead to 10 points on a Beth Michuda three-point shot with 12:31 left. Once again the Owls responded by going on a 15-6 scoring run to cut the Ram lead to one point with 5:16 left on the clock. Finally, with 2:24 showing, junior Nicole Chaszar's free throw gave the Owls their first lead since very early in the contest, 55-54. Temple would never relinquish the lead as they converted the necessary free throws down the stretch to give the Owls the victory, 62-57.
Temple can attribute their second half comeback to solid free throw shooting. The Owls converted 24-of-27 free throws in the second half. Temple also played solid defense snatching 13 steals, led by Stacey Smalls' six, and forcing 23 Fordham turnovers.
The win improves the Owls to 10-16 overall and 5-10 in the Atlantic 10. Temple will conclude the regular season at home against St. Bonaventure on Feb. 25.
