East Tennessee Takes Two-Stroke Lead After Rain-Shortened Opening Round of NCAA Men's Golf East Regional

MOOSIC, PA (May 18) - Freshman Thomas Lee (Tenafly, NJ) carded a one-under-par 70 to lead East Tennessee State University to a one-stroke lead in the opening round of the 54-hole NCAA East Regional Friday at Glenmaura National Golf Club. Lightning delayed the event one hour and forty-five minutes before fifteen teams took to the course and attempted to finish. When the horn sounded nine teams and 42 individuals were held from posting scores.

The Pirates shot a four-score seven-over-par total of 291. Clemson is in second with a 292, while Mississippi State and Virginia tied for third with 293. Wake Forest is fifth (294), followed by Georgia, Georgia State and Middle Tennessee State University in sixth-place at 296 and Georgia Tech in ninth (297).

Senior James Driscoll (Brookline, MA) of Virginia and Georgia senior Michael Morrison (Signal Mountain, TN) shot two-under-par 69s to share medalist honors. Clemson's duo of senior Jonathan Byrd (Columbia, S.C.) and junior Lucas Glover (Greenville, S.C.) both posted one-under-par 70s. Finishing tied for sixth place with even-par 71s were Tennessee's Derrick Centers (Somerset, KY), Ben Smith (London, England) of Mississippi State and Florida junior Ben Banks (Surrey, England). East Tennessee's Adam Riddering (Maple Grove, MN), Mississippi State's Codie Mudd (Louisville, KY) and John Mueller (Arlington, VA), Seton Hall's Eugene Smith (Glen Ridge, NJ), Penn State's Mike Saporito (Macedon, N.Y.) and Jay Morgan (Choctaw, OK) of Wake Forest are tied for sixth-place with 72s.

The following teams did not finish the first round: Yale University, James Madison University, University of Richmond, North Carolina State University, Duke University, Augusta State University, Auburn University, University of Florida, University of North Florida and the University of South Carolina.

The top 11 teams, along with the top two individuals whose team do not advance, will advance to the NCAA championships in Opelika, Alabama on May 31-June 3.
