PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple University Women's Basketball coaching staff
is one step closer to completion with the hiring of Gaye Chapman as an
assistant coach. Chapman is the second addition to new head coach Dawn
Staley's staff, joining associate head coach Shawn Campbell. Chapman
brings six years of collegiate coaching experience to the Temple
program.
Prior to coming to Temple, Chapman was an assistant coach for
women's basketball at American University (1997-2000). She helped the
1997-98 team record its best season in school history (23-7) and make
postseason play for the first time. Her principal duties included
recruiting national and international student-athletes, coordinating
team travel and developing perimeter players.
A native of West Chester, Pennsylvania, Chapman earned her Bachelor
of Science degree in Health and Physical Education in 1995 from East
Stroudsburg University. She then served as assistant women's basketball
coach at her alma mater while obtaining her Master's degree in Health
and Physical Education in 1996.
Chapman served a one-year stint as assistant coach at Southampton
College in New York. At Southampton she was again a part of school
history, helping the Colonials post a 19-10 record, the most wins ever
for the program.
As a player, Chapman was a four-year letterwinner at East
Stroudsburg. In her senior season, she was named Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference (PSAC) Player of the Year. She earned Division II
Kodak All-American Honorable Mention. Chapman was also ESU's Female
Athlete of the Year and made the NCAA East Region All-Tournament team.
She scored 1,224 career points as a Warrior and recorded the first
triple double in University history against West Chester University.
