Temple Owl Rookie Andrew McMenamin Gets Soccer Hat Trick in College Debut
9.2.00 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA - Temple University's Men's Soccer program got off to a great start Saturday afternoon (9-2-00), defeating Soccer Seven rival Drexel University 3-2 in overtime. The Owls overcame a 2-1 deficit, thanks to freshman midfielder Andrew McMenamin (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven), who contributed all three of Temple's goals. McMenamin was making his college soccer debut at Temple Stadium.
McMenamin gave the Owls an early lead, scoring midway through the first half with an assist by sophomore midfielder John Burns (Philadelphia/Northeast Catholic). The Dragons answered with a goal apiece from senior midfielder Justin Bieber and junior midfielder Jim Costello. Drexel led 2-1 as the teams entered the locker room at the half.
The second half belonged to Temple, as McMenamin scored his second goal of the day with an assist from fellow Strath Haven High School alum and junior midfielder Jeff Fisher (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven). The score was knotted at two after regulation, and McMenamin was not finished scoring. He found the back of the net less than five minutes into the first overtime to give Temple the win in their season home opener.
The Owls are now 1-0-0 on their season. Their next game will be Wednesday, September 6, at 4:00 p.m. at Rider University.
