Men's Soccer Falls to St. Joseph's 6-1

Philadelphia - St. Joseph's Freshman forward Andrew Kulinski (Elmer, NJ/St. Augustine Prep)
tallied three goals and added two assists to set a SJU freshman single game
scoring and lead St. Josephs to a 6-1 win over visiting Temple in the
Atlantic 10 opener for both teams.
Kulinski opened the scoring for the Hawks in the 37th minute, tallying a goal
off a rebound of a Ryan Dougherty (Philadelphia/Father Judge) shot. The two
teamed up again two minutes later with this time Kulinski feeding Dougherty
with a perfect cross. Dougherty, a junior midfielder, then blasted it by
Temple goalie Cornelius Murphy (6 saves) for the score.
Leading 2-0 at intermission, SJU came out strong with Kulinski scoring in
the 48th minute on a long run. Junior midfielder Jim Raisch put the Owls on
the scoreboard with a goal in the 51st minute off an assist by Angelo DiCarlo
to cut the deficit to 3-1. SJUs Matt Cox (Cheltenham, PA/La Salle)
answered right back, sending a direct kick into the top left corner in the
53rd minute. Senior back Erick Bodge (Tuckerton, NJ/Pinelands) then tallied
one minute later off a Kulinski pass to break the game open.
Kulinski ended the scoring and recorded the first SJU hat trick since
junior Roman Escobar accomplished the feat against UMass in a 6-1 win on
October 4, 1998 with a goal in the 82nd minute. Dougherty and freshman Tom
Brislin (Harveys Lake, PA/Lake Lehman) assisted on the goal.
Freshman Michael Drozdick (Long Island, NY/Oceanside) recorded just one
save for SJU as the Hawks controlled play in the Temple zone all night. SJU
outshot Temple, 20-9 for the contest.
The win was the first for SJU over Temple since a 4-2 Hawk victory on
October 29, 1994,a span of five contests. The Hawks snapped a three-game
losing streak with the win and are now 3-4 on the year, 1-0 in Atlantic 10
play and 1-3 in the Philadelphia Soccer 7. Temple falls to 1-4 overall, 0-1
in A-10, 1-2 in Soccer 7.
