LAWRENCEVILLE--Junior Steve Borota (Roebling) scored on his first shot as a Rider Bronc to lead the home team to a 2-1 overtime victory over Temple Wednesday.
Rider (2-1) out-shot Temple (1-1) 21-6, including 19-4 in regulation, but trailed 1-0 until junior Steve Jackson (Windsor/Lawrence High) tied the score at 1-1 with just 7:20 left in the second half.
In the overtime period, Rider freshman Dan Sheck (Philadelphia/Fr. Judge) passed to freshman Tim O'Neill (Philadelphia/Northeast Catholic), who drew the attention of the Temple defenders before feeding Borota. The Burlington Community College transfer shot the ball into the far low corner for the game winner 10 minutes into overtime.
Matt Kaufman gave Temple a 1-0 lead with 1:40 left in the first half when he stole the ball from Rider freshman goal keeper Brian Gill (Smithtown, NY/St. Anthony's) and scored from five yards out.
The victory was just the fifth for Rider in 28 meetings with Temple (one tie) and the first over the Owls since 1982.
Gill made two saves for the Broncs. Cornelius Murphy made 12 saves for the Owls.
The Owls return to Temple Stadium to host the Philadelphia Rams on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 3:30 p.m.
