Women's Track Finishes Strong In Bucknell Octagonal

Lewisburg, Pa. (Jan. 22) - The Temple men's and women's indoor

track teams competed in the Bucknell Octagonal this past weekend. The

women had a strong outing, finishing second overall with 16 athletes

placing in the top five in various events. The men finished sixth with six

athletes placing in the top five in their respective competitions.

Afia Brown (Yeadon, Pa./Penn Wood) led the way for the Owls placing first

in three different events: the 55m dash (7.28), the 400m (58.29) and the

200m (25.33). Sophomore Edith Lewis (New Castle, Del./William Penn)

had another strong showing capturing both the triple jump (36'11 1/4")

and long jump (17'6 1/4"). Sophomore Naomi Beverly (Marietta,

Ga./Marietta) placed second in the 55m dash with a time of 7.39. In the

same race, freshman Jaweia Campbell (Trenton, N.J./Ewing) finished

sixth (7.64). Campbell also placed third in the 55m hurdles heat 3 with a

time of 9.12. The Owls had three additional athletes place in the 400m

besides Brown. Freshmen Jessica Jenning (Washington, D.C./Howard

D. Woodson) and Samantha Porter (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) came

in second and third with times of 1:00.56 and 1:00.76. Senior Kasha

Benson-Craig (Sechenville, N.J./Highland Regional) also placed in the

400m with a time of 1:02.20.

In the 800m final, freshman, Ruby Amanze (R'slyn, Pa./Abington) finished

second with a time of 2:16.75. Freshman Nicole Porter (Hartford,

Conn./Farmington) came in second place in the 1000m final (3:08.07). In

the shot put, Rashida Stamps (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) and Enewan

Adjah (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) finished in second and fifth place

(39'1", 37'9 1/2"). Owls sophomore, Marir'se Roach (Danielson,

Conn./Killingly) finished sixth in the 55m hurdles heat 2 (10.92) and ninth

in the 800m final (2:37.54). Junior Patricia Swiggett (Chester,

Pa./Chester) placed second in the 500m section 2 with a time of 1:20.92.

Both Temple's relay teams placed in the 4x400m. Temple "A" finished

second (4:01.44) and Temple "B" came in third (4:06.35).

On the men's side, Tracey Champion (Philadelphia, Pa./West Catholic)

finished first in the 55m high hurdles (7.78) and fourth in the 55m dash

heat 3 (6.82). Law student Robert Lythgoe (Lester, Pa./Monsignor

Bonner) placed third in the 1000m final with a time of 2:32.63. OwlsO

Robert Leite-Young (York, Pa./Central York) came in fourth in the long

jump final (21' 3/4") and third in the 55m dash heat 5 (6.83). Freshman

pole vaulter, Kevin Kelly (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) placed ninth with a

height of 13O9." In the 800m section 2, sophomore Daniel Stevens

(Philadelphia, Pa./Dobbins/Randolph A.V.T.S.) finished first with a time if

2:00.66.

Three of the Owls placed in the 400m. In section 1, freshman Gregory

Vaughan (Largo, Md./Suitland) placed third (51.21). Junior Otis Hudson,

Jr. finished fourth in section 2 (53.40) and freshman Jeffrey Hagues came

in fourth in section 3 (56.22). Temple freshman, Justin Plato placed fifth

in the 500m section 2 with a time of 1:11.30. In the 200m, William

Springfield (Roxbury, Mass./B'ston Latin School) finished second in

section 3 with a time of 23.28 and Hudson placed fourth in section 2

(23.85). Temple "A" placed second in the 4x400 section 1 with a time of

3:30.17.

Both men's and women's teams will be in action again on January 26

and 27 at Boston University in the Terrier Classic.
