1.27.01 | Women's Basketball

Pittsburgh, Pa. (Jan. 26) - The Temple women's basketball team (11-6, 4-2) took its act on

the road and overcame a large deficit to beat Duquesne 60-53 on January 26. The Owls fell behind early 15-0 and shot just 27.6 percent in the first half but when they emerged from the lockerroom junior forward Athena Christoforakis and her Temple team took control of the game.

Christoforakis scored a game-high 17 points on 7-11 shooting from the field and she was the Owls co-leader in rebounding with seven boards. Three other Temple players were double-digit scorers including Regan Apo (12), Lisa Jakubowicz (10) and Stacey Smalls (10).

With 10 games remaining in the regular season, Temple's current win total (11) surpasses the number of wins the Owls had in 1999-2000 (10-18). Once again the defense fueled the offense as Temple won the turnovers (Duquesne 26, Temple 19), rebounding (37-36) and steals (9-4) battles.

The Owls have played 11 of their 17 games away from the Liacouras Center and their head coach likes how her team responds to the atmosphere of playing on the road. "We seem to play well on the road," said coach Staley. "We get away from our friends and family and just concentrate on winning the game," she added.

Next up for Temple is another road game against Atlantic 10 Conference leader George Washington (January 28 at 2:00 p.m.).
