TEMPLE WOMEN PICKED TO FINISH 1ST IN THE ATLANTIC-10 EAST DIVISION

11.7.01 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple University women's basketball team has been chosen by the Atlantic 10 coaches as the preseason favorites to win the East Division of the conference. After finishing 19-11 in the inaugural season of Head Coach Dawn Staley, the Owls garnered 11 first place votes for the top spot in the East. The poll was released today prior to the Women's Basketball Media Teleconference.

"We're really flattered by the coaches selection for preseason but we [our team] feel more comfortable being in the hunting position. Where as when you're number one, you are going to be hunted." Staley said.

Junior guard Stacey Smalls was selected to the preseason All-Atlantic 10 team and the All-Defensive team. Smalls, a 5-5 guard from Cheltenham, averaged 11.2 ppg and 3.5 apg. Freshman guard Cynthia Jordan was selected to the preseason All-Rookie team. Jordan, a 5-7 guard from Chesapeake, Va., earned Conference Player of the year after leading the Deep Creek H.S. (Chesapeake, Va.) basketball team to two consecutive Conference Championships.

Temple opens the regular season on Friday, November 9 at 7:00 p.m. against Evansville at McGonigle Hall in the preseason WNIT.
