TEMPLE BEATS VILLANOVA IN DEFENSIVE STRUGGLE

12.1.01 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team (2-2, 0-0 Atlantic 10) won its second straight home game of the season in a good old fashioned Big Five city series battle against Villanova (4-1, 0-0 Big East) 43-35 on December 1 in the first game of a men's/women's doubleheader. Senior forward Athena Christoforakis led the Owls with a game-high 14 points and a career-high 18 rebounds in a game where Temple shot just 22 percent (14-62) from the field.

The teams were tied 15-15 at halftime as the teams shot a combined 11-52 (21 percent) in the first half. Villanova led by as many as seven points with 5:47 remaining but the Owls went on a 16-1 run to put the game away.

After shooting 0-5 from the field in the first half, A.C. (Christoforakis) really turned on the juice and carried the Owls throughout the second half. In addition to her dominance in the scoring column and on the boards, Christoforakis added three steals, another game-high. "The first half I couldn't make a shot," Christoforakis said. "The second half my teammates still had confidence in me and I was able to come through for the team," she added. Senior guard Natalia Isaac and junior guard Stacy Smalls teamed up to post seven points each, giving the Owls the lift they needed.

Mimi Riley led the Wildcats with 11 points and six rebounds, matched by teammate Stephanie Baker also with six rebounds. Villanova shot 37 percent from the field outrebounded Temple 43-38, but gave up 26 turnovers for 20 points down the stretch.

Temple will now take off for their second road trip of the season traveling once again to SEC country on Tuesday, December 4, when the Owls face South Carolina at 7:00 p.m.
