8.1.01 | General
The intercollegiate athletics program at Temple University produced its best finish ever in the overall Atlantic 10 Conference Commissioner's Cup for the 2000-01 season of sport, as the Owls placed third behind five-time winner Massachusetts and runner-up Rhode Island. The A-10 initiated the competition in 1993 and first awarded separate men's and women's cups in 1997.
Although Temple does not field teams in four of the Atlantic 10's 22 sponsored sports (men's and women's cross country; men's and women's swimming and diving), the Owls scored a total of 105 points in the competition. The Temple women's teams totaled 64 points to place second behind Massachusetts (87.5), while the Temple men scored 41 to place seventh. Points are awarded in descending order of finish, equal to the number of teams participating in each sport. Regular season standings are used in round robin sports: baseball, men's and women's basketball, field hockey, women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, softball and women's volleyball.
Under the direction of A-10 Coach of the Year Kim Ciarrocca, the Temple lacrosse team won championships in both the regular season and the conference tournament. The Owls also collected tournament championships in men's basketball and baseball. Each of the three sports earned invitations to their respective NCAA Championship Tournaments. James "Skip" Wilson was tabbed as the Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year in baseball.
Without question, the highlight of Temple's 2000-01 athletic year was the performance of coach John Chaney's men's basketball team, which staged a late-season rally to win the A-10 Tournament and advance to the NCAA South Region final. In May, it was announced that coach Chaney had been elected to the James A. Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame.
In other Atlantic 10 competition, first-year head coach Dawn Staley guided the women's basketball team to its first winning season since 1990, a third-place finish in the conference and a new school attendance record. Coach Rocci Pignoli's softball team rallied to win its last 10 games consecutively to finish a strong second in the A-10. Coach Lauren Fuchs guided her field hockey team to a second-place finish in the A-10, as the Owls posted a sparkling 4-1 league record. Second-year track & field coach George Phillips directed the Temple women to a program-best second place finish at the A-10 Indoor Championships. In his 30th and final season, Coach John MacDonald encouraged his golf team to a solid third-place finish in the A-10 Championships.
The program produced additional accomplishments outside of Atlantic 10 Conference competition. Coach Gavin White's men's varsity crew won its 13th-consecutive Dad Vail Regatta and finished the season as the nation's 13th-ranked team. Under coaches Nikki Franke and Zoila Palacio, the women's fencing team reeled off 16-consecutive dual-match victories and successfully defended its NIWFA Championship for a fourth straight year. Coach Fred Turoff celebrated his 25th year at Temple by guiding his men's gymnastics team to a second-place ECAC finish and team invitation to the NCAA Championships. In his third year at the Temple football helm, coach Bobby Wallace guided the Owls to their best season in a decade.
