1.18.02 | Women's Basketball

Washington D.C. -- The Temple women's basketball team (9-7, 4-1) lost its first Atlantic 10 Conference game of the season to George Washington (10-6, 5-0) in the final seconds 54-53 on January 18. The game lived up to expectations with both teams coming in with identical overall and conference records and multi-game win streaks. The Owls were in the game throughout, despite shooting 17-64 (27 percent) from the field and 6-26 (23 percent) from the three-point arc. In fact, Temple held a 53-52 advantage with just over eight seconds remaining in the contest. But George Washington's Anna Montanana grabbed a missed shot and scored a layup as time expired.

Senior forward Athena Christoforakis led the Owls with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Natalia Isaac (10) and Stacey Smalls (10) were the other double figure scorers for Temple. Lisa Jakubowicz (six points) and Regan Apo (six points) were key contributors down the stretch. The Owls' defense forced 22 Colonials turnovers and Temple won the steals battle 6-3. Although the Cherry and White were outshot 43 percent to 19 percent in the first half, Temple trailed by only three at the break, 19-16. The Owls outscored the Colonials in the second half 37-35, but it was not enough to escape with a victory.

Elena Vishniakova led GW with 21 points and 12 rebounds, both game highs. Marsheik Witherspoon (10) was the only other Colonial in double figures. Anna Montanana added eight points for the Colonials, none bigger than her final two at the buzzer.

Next up for Temple, a long bus ride to Olean, New York to face St. Bonaventure on Sunday, January 20 at 12:00 noon.
