O'Brien said that "after serving in this position for almost six years during a particularly demanding time, I have concluded that the time is right for me to look for a new professional challenge." O'Brien also cited his personal responsibilities following the tragic death of his son in 1997 as a factor in his decision.
"Temple University is a great institution, and I am proud to have served it as Director of Athletics," O'Brien said.
During O'Brien's tenure, Temple opened the Liacouras Center, its world-class basketball facility, and substantially increased attendance for its football program. He also significantly improved academic support programs for Temple student athletes.
O'Brien expressed appreciation to former Temple President Peter J. Liacouras for appointing him as Athletic Director and to Adamany for supporting O'Brien's efforts during the past 18 months.
"Temple is grateful to Dave O'Brien for his service to this institution, not only as our athletic director but as an educational leader," Adamany said. "Dave will remain part of Temple for the next year, and I have asked him to advise me on an array of athletics issues, including strengthening our non-revenue sports programs."
President Adamany announced that a national search for a new Athletic Director will commence in the weeks ahead.
