MEN'S SOCCER SNAPS LOSING STREAK, DEFEAT RAMS 2-1

10.27.02 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA--A shot through a crowded goalie box by freshman Blair Carson, with just 41 seconds left in regulation play, secured the 2-1 victory for the Temple University men's soccer team (6-11, 3-5 A-10) who snapped a four game losing streak and handed the Rhode Island Rams their second Atlantic 10 loss of the season.

In the final home game of the 2002 season, the Cherry and White scored first with just under 11 minutes left in the first period when sophomore forward Nate Webb caught the Rams goalie outside the box and headed the ball to the back of the net, giving the Owls the 1-0 advantage going into halftime. The Rams tied the game 1-1 at the 55 minute mark when midfielder Brian Mazza put a 15 yard shot past a diving Owls goalie.

As the two teams matched each other shot for shot, it looked as if the game would go into overtime with a 1-1 ties. With just 41 seconds in regulation play, the Owl's Blair Carson shot the ball past several Rams defenders to find the back of the net and give Temple the 2-1 victory.

Temple goalie Patrick Hannigan had an impressive day as the Owls net minder posting nine saves and playing all ninety minutes in goal. Rhode Island goalie Michael Charles also played all ninety minutes and contributed seven saves.

Temple, under the direction of three-year Head Coach David MacWilliams, travel to Ohio next weekend to take on the Dayton Flyers on 11/1 and Xavier on 11/3.
