10.29.02 | Men's Golf

ABSECON, NJ--The 6,700-yard course at Galloway National Golf Club is tough enough on the best of days, but when cold, wind and rain are added to the equation, it is simply a beast too hard to tame. So discovered the 10 intercollegiate teams that braved the final round of Temple's inaugural John MacDonald Classic, won by Iona College with a 36-hole team total of 622.

Coach Vince McDermott's Gaels were led by freshman Angus McAllister, who also collected the medallist trophy with a seven-over-par two-round total of 149. Freshman teammate Paul Selvaggio placed sixth in the individual competition with a 36-hole total of 155. Brian Whitman of Rutgers (150), Jerry Chen of the host Owls (151) Brent Pittman of Rutgers (153) and James Chan of Temple (154) completed the top five.

Of the 50 players that teed it up for the final round, only eight managed to score below 80. There were seven rounds of 90 or more and one over the century mark. The best round on the final day of competition was a five-over-par 76 by Iona's Mark LeVeck.

Finishing behind the champion Gaels were Rutgers (624), Temple (628), Delaware (639), Loyola of Maryland (656), Duquesne (659), Fordham (664), Dartmouth (667), Connecticut (673) and La Salle (692).
