VILLANOVA TOPS TEMPLE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TO CLAIM BIG 5 CHAMPIONSHIP

12.21.02 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team (4-5, 0-0 A-10) dropped its fourth straight game to a BIG EAST opponent when it fell to Villanova (7-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) 66-54 on December 21 at the Pavilion. The Wildcats have now won the Philadelphia Big 5 title by going 4-0 in city series action.

Sophomore Khadija Bowens led the Owls with 12 points. Fellow sophomore Ari Moore (11 points) was the only other Temple player to score in double figures. Junior Lorenthea Jones led the Owls in rebounding with a game-high eight boards while freshman center Candice Dupree led the team in assists (3) and blocks (3).

Katie Davis and Trish Juline led Villanova with 18 points apiece. Courtney Mix (12 points) also scored in double figures for the Wildcats.

The formula for defeat has been similar in Temple's last two outings as the Owls have lost the turnover (TU 17, Nova 14) and steals (TU 5, Nova 9) battles while allowing their opponent to feast at the free throw line. Villanova was 20-26 from the charity stripe while Temple was 7-11. The Owls did manage to outrebound the Wildcats 35-31 but down the stretch, Temple could not get the key stops it needed to close the gap.

Up next for the Owls, a visit from No. 19 South Carolina on Friday, December 27 at the Liacouras Center. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
