TEMPLE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL LOSES TO UMASS, 64-56, IN OVERTIME
2.15.02 | Women's Basketball
The Minutewomen avenged an earlier season 67-57 loss to the Owls by hitting three of five field goals in during overtime and eight of eight free throws to drop the Owls into a first place tie with Saint Joseph's in the Atlantic 10 East.
"This loss was real discouraging," Temple coach Dawn Staley said after the game. "Our approach has to be different the second time we play teams that we have beaten earlier in the season."
Natalia Isaac led the Owls with 15 points and Athena Christoforakis and Chrissy Cruz each added 10 points for Temple. Christoforakis led the Owls with seven rebounds and Lisa Jakubowicz chipped in eight points and six rebounds.
The Owls led by as many as six in the second half, but the Minutewomen fought back to tie the game at 49 with 1:41 remaining in the second half after a three-pointer by Katie Nelson.
Stacey Smalls hit a free throw with 46 seconds remaining, but Nekole Smith answered with a free throw of her own with 12 seconds left in the half, to tie the teams at 50 and send them into overtime.
Jennifer Butler led the Minutewomen with 13 points and 18 rebounds.
