BUSY WEEKEND AHEAD FOR TEMPLE UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS

The Temple University Department of Athletics is preparing for a busy weekend as the Owls play host to five sporting events, including the Verizon Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship, March 1-4 at the Liacouras Center. In addition, 10 Temple athletic teams will be in action over the weekend, playing at locations ranging from Boston, Mass. to Wichita, Kansas.

The weekend begins with the Women's Basketball Championship on Friday, March 1. Eleven games will be played over four days, concluding with the A-10 championship game on Monday at 5:30 p.m. The contest will air live nationally on ESPN 2. Coach Dawn Staley's Owls are the top seeded team in the East bracket.

The annual Temple Softball Tournament will take place Saturday and Sunday, March 2-3 at Erny Field, the former site of Temple Stadium. Six games are slated to take place over two days. Temple, Drexel and Princeton will vie for the title.

Saturday will also feature a women's gymnastics tri-meet at McGonigle Hall beginning at 2:00 p.m. Temple, Rhode Island and Towson will compete. McGonigle Hall remains occupied on Sunday for the Temple University Cheer and Dance Team Championships. Over 80 cheer and dance squads from the Mid-Atlantic Region, at both the high school and youth all-star levels, are slated to perform beginning at 9:30 a.m.

The McGonigle Hall complex will also host the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association Championships on Sunday in Pearson Hall. The event begins at 9:00 a.m. and will feature intercollegiate women's fencers from across the country.

Six Temple teams will be on the road over the weekend. The Temple baseball team, under the direction of 43rd-year head coach Skip Wilson, will be in Kansas to play three games against Wichita State from Friday-Sunday. The women's tennis team competes at Duquesne, versus the Dukes on Friday and against Xavier on Saturday. The women's track team competes at the ECAC Championships in Boston, Mass. on Saturday and Sunday. The men's track team joins them in Boston to compete in the IC4A Championships. The Owl lacrosse team plays a 12 noon game in Hamilton, N.Y. versus Colgate and 20th-year head coach John Chaney leads the men's basketball team into a 1:00 p.m. contest versus Big 5 rival Saint Joseph's at the Palestra on Sunday.
