TEMPLE TO HOLD 20TH ANNUAL MURPHY CUP REGATTA ON SATURDAY APRIL 20, 2002
4.19.02 | Women's Rowing
The Temple men's crew is looking to defend its title after both the varsity 8 and the novice 8 took home first place finishes last year. The women will look to improve over their fifth place finish in 2001. Over 800 athletes representing more than 20 colleges and universities from around the east coast will be participating in the event including cross-town rivals La Salle, Villanova, and Saint Joseph's.
The event is held in honor of former Temple rower, John J. Murphy who rowed for Temple from 1979-1981 and led the Cherry and White to five consecutive Dad Vail Regatta titles. Tragically, in the summer of 1981, Murphy was killed in a hit and run accident. The Murphy Cup Regatta is held in his memory and has grown to become one of the premier collegiate regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
The award ceremony, food concessions and regatta operations are organized by the Friends of Temple Rowing and will be held at the Canoe Club on Kelly Drive.
