TEMPLE ANNOUNCES 2002-03 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SCHEDULE

9.18.02 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball schedule for 2002-03was released today. The slate includes as many as seven teams that participated in the 2002 NCAA Tournament, including the 2001 women's national champion.

The Owls will face Boston College, Kansas State, Santa Clara, South Carolina, Villanova and 2001 NCAA Champion Notre Dame, all field of 64 participants from last season. The schedule also includes a potential game against 2002 NCAA Tournament participant Stanford and contests with traditional powerhouses Rutgers and Seton Hall, plus the always tough Atlantic 10 and Philadelphia Big Five opponents. Coach Dawn Staley's scheduling philosophy has always been you have to play the best to become the best.

Temple, itself a 2002 NCAA Tournament team, finished last season at 20-11 and won the Atlantic 10 Conference Title for the first time in school history. The Owls return six players from that team, including All-America candidate Stacey Smalls, who averaged 11.3 points per game and 2.7 assists per game at the point guard position last season. Temple will have to blend in seven players who will be playing Division I basketball for the first time in 2002-03. The Owls will be super-sized this season, as five players on the roster are listed at six feet or taller, compared to two players eclipsing the six-foot mark last year.
