TEMPLE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH DAWN STALEY NAMED TO ACC 50TH ANNIVERSARY TEAM AND CAPTURES GOLD IN THE SAME DAY
9.25.02 | Women's Basketball
Ironically, the honor comes on the day that Staley helped USA basketball win the gold medal at the 2002 World Championship with a 79-74 victory over Russia. The victory capped an undefeated, nine game run for the USA at this year's championship.
When asked how this particular gold medal felt, Staley had this reply, "I had one of the unfortunate experiences of getting a bronze medal in the '94 World Championship. That was the worst feeling i've ever had, and I don't want to ever experience it again. So getting gold medals is always something that's on the top of my list, especially this year. This is probably my last World Championship, and I wanted to go out with a bang."
After an active summer that included a playoff run with the WNBA's Charlotte Sting, immediately followed by the World Championship, Staley will soon return to the Temple campus to resume her coaching duties with the Owls full time. Practice officially begins in mid-October.
