WOMEN'S BASKETBALL DEFEATED 80-73 BY RHODE ISLAND

KINGSTON, RHODE ISLAND- The Temple women's basketball team (5-11, 1-4 A-10) was defeated 80-73 by Rhode Island (10-6, 2-3 A-10) on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Ryan Center. This was the Owls third straight loss. Temple had four double figure scorers including senior guard Stacey Smalls' team-high (16), Christena Hamilton (15), Candice Dupree (14 points and seven rebounds) and Ari Moore (10) rounded out the double figure scorers for Temple. The Rams had five double figure scorers including Denise King's game-high (21), Shayla Johnson and Tanya Rhodes each had (16 points), Katie Stailings (11) and Amanda Mills (10) also reached double figures for the home team.

Temple led 13-2 on a lay-up by Dupree and led by as many as 15 in the first half (25-10) on a lay-up by Hamilton with 10:29 left in the first half. The Rams went on a 22-9 run to trim Temple's lead to two (34-32) at intermission.

The Owls held a slim four point lead on a jumper by Smalls with 17:15 in the second half. The Rams took the lead for good on a three point play by Johnson at the 14:38 mark. Rhode Island led by as many as 11 twice, the last time on free throws by King with 23 seconds left.

Temple lost the battle of the boards 46-20 including a 24-10 offensive rebound advantage by the Rams. The Owls have been outrebounded by their last three opponents by a combined 50 rebounds.

The Rams only committed 12 turnovers nine less than Temple usually forces and 23 less than they did in the January 9 game in Philadelphia. Rhode Island also made 16-of-18 free throws in the second half while the Owls made 9-of-13. Overall Rhode Island had 29 free throws attempts (21-29) compared to Temple's 19 (14-19).

The Owls will next host Fordham on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m in the Liacouras Center.

Note: Owls senior guard Chrissy Cruz did not play due to an ankle injury suffered in practice. Cruz had started the previous three games.

Stacey Smalls suffered a cut lip and recieved medical attention at a local hospital in Rhode Island and was released in time to board the team bus to Philadelphia.
