MEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS GEORGE WASHINGTON, 3-1, IN TEMPLE STADIUM FINALE

10.26.03 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA -- Junior forward Nate Webb scored two goals and assisted on a third to lead the Temple men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over George Washington in the program's final game at Temple Stadium. The Owls (10-3-2, 6-1-1 in A-10 play), which will play their home games on their Ambler campus next season, clinched a berth in the Atlantic 10 Tournament with the win, their first appearance in the conference postseason tourney since 1993.

George Washington (5-10-1, 3-4-1) jumped on the scoreboard first as sophomore forward John Allen took a pass from sophomore midfielder Frank Ambrosio and drilled it past Temple keeper Patrick Hannigan into the right top corner of the net in the 23rd minute.

The Owls answered back just before intermission as Webb made a great individual effort and then hit an open Tony Donatelli at the top of the box who tied the game with a shot just inside the right post in the 44th minute.

The game remained tied until Donatelli fed Webb on a nice pass in the 75th minute and the Owls' leading scorer sent his seventh goal of the season past GW keeper Derek Biss (five saves). Webb then completed the scoring with his eight tally of the season nine minutes later on a nice long pass from sophomore defender Tim Greer.

Hannigan, who was kicked in the face on a play in the 49th minute, had three saves in the match, including a big stop in the 81st minute on a shot by the Colonials Joe Siegel.

At the start of the contest Temple head coach David MacWilliams honored his three seniors, Matt Moran, Tony Viglietti and Roberto Vinces, as they took part in their final home game as Owls.

Temple, which remains in first place in the A-10 with the win, takes to the road next weekend for games at Massachusetts (10/31 - 2:30 p.m.) and Rhode Island (11/2 -- 1:00 p.m.).
