LOYOLA WINS JOHN MACDONALD GOLF CLASSIC AS HOST OWLS FINISH THIRD
10.28.03 | Men's Golf
Temple (623) finished third in the Classic for the second consecutive year. The Owls entered the second round in fourth place, trailing city rival Penn by one stroke, 315-314. The Cherry & White shot a 308 on Tuesday to overtake the Quakers, as the Ivy Leaguers posted a 318 team score.
Loyola's Will Shriver took home the individual title after defeating Delaware's Joe McClister in a one-hole playoff. After entering the club house with seven-over 149 scores, two strokes better than the nearest competitor, the two headed back out to the links and par four, hole No. 1 to decide the victor. With an entourage in tow, Shriver's drive landed in the center of the fairway as McClister found the left-side trees off the tee. Shriver's approach then landed six feet from the hole. The Greyhound proceeded to putt-in for birdie to take home the crown.
Temple's top individual finish belonged to Billy Mullen, who finished tied for fifth with a 153 (76-77) performance. Other Owl competitors included Pat O'Neill (T-10th, 81-75=156), Logan Terry (T-13th, 77-80=157), Matt Roberts (T-21st, 81-78=159) and James Chan (T-34th, 86-78=164).
Weather on the second day of competition resembled that of day one, as wind, soggy turf and overcast skies increased the difficulty of the already challenging par 71, 6,374-yard course.
The Classic marked the final competition of the fall for Temple. The Owls, under the direction of third-year head coach Bill Mannino, return to the links for the spring season in March.
