MOOSIC, PA - Penn State University battled through cold and windy conditions to fire a first-round 293 to take the lead on day one of the 2003 Temple Owl Invitational at Glenmaura National Golf Club. The Nittany Lions team round of nine-over par gave them a three shot advantage over Rutgers (296). Host Temple exited Friday in fifth place with a 315-stroke performance on the 6,693-yard, par 71 course.
Penn State's Mark Leon and Temple's Pat O'Neill share the individual lead after shooting one-under par 70's. Rutgers' Brent Pittman and Princeton's Jason Gerken are tied for third place on the heels of the co-leaders with even-par 71 efforts.
Thirteen universities hit the links Friday on the Michael Hurzden-designed course that plays host to the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic of the Nationwide Tour. Fifteen teams were originally scheduled to participate in the Invitational but Maryland and Pennsylvania withdrew from the tournament.
The second and final round of the tournament tees-off tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.
