TEMPLE REMAINS ATOP A-10 STANDINGS IN MEN'S SOCCER WITH 2-0 WIN AT UMASS

10.31.03 | Men's Soccer

AMHERST, MA -- Junior Nate Webb headed in the winning goal in the 49th minute and Patrick Hannigan posted his seventh shutout in 11 starts to lead the Temple men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over host Massachusetts at Rudd Field on Friday afternoon. The win snapped a seven-game Minutemen home unbeaten streak and kept the Owls in sole possession of first place in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Temple is now 11-3-2 overall and 7-1-1 in league play.

UMass was the aggressor in the first half, putting constant pressure on Hannigan. The MInutemen nearly took an early lead when freshman Richard Higa was found streaking down the left side, but Hannigan came out to meet him and stopped a shot just after it left Higa's foot to keep the game scoreless.

Temple took a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the second half, when Webb redirected a direct kick from sweeper back Joe Brocker into the far right corner at the 48:22 mark for his team-leading ninth goal. Temple then settled into a defensive set, and used a Tony Donatelli goal in the 82nd minute for insurance. Donatelli, who notched his fifth tally of the year, received a pass from Chad Baker and lifted a shot from the top of the box into the left corner.

Hannigan, who lowered his A-10 leading goals against average to 0.35, recorded four saves in the match. Umass keeper Colin Burns also made four saves.

Temple can clinch a tie for the A-10 regular season standings with a win on Sunday at Rhode Island (1:00 p.m.). Umass falls to 10-6-1, 4-4-1 in league play.
