NITTANY LIONS WIN TEMPLE INVITATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT AS OWLS FINISH SEVENTH

MOOSIC, PA-Penn State, with a two-round 597 (293-304), captured the team title of the 2003 Temple Invitational, played October 3-4 at Glenmaura National Golf Club. The Nittany Lions out-distanced second place Rutgers (296-311=607) by ten strokes on the par 71, 6,693-yard course. Host Temple, which entered the second and final round in fifth place, finished seventh with a 634 (315-319) team effort.

Rutgers' Brent Pitman, who entered the final round tied for third place, shot a 72 on Saturday to take home the individual title with a one-over-par 143 (71-72). Princeton's Jason Gerken, who was tied with Pitman, finished one-stroke behind with a 144 performance (71-73).

Temple's Pat O'Neill, who shared the lead after day one with a one under-par 70, shot an 80 on Saturday to finish tied for sixth place with a 150 score. Penn State's Mark Leon followed up his opening round 70 with a 75 to finish third with a 145 total.

Thirteen universities hit the links Friday and Saturday on the Michael Hurzden-designed course that plays host to the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic of the Nationwide Tour. Fifteen teams were originally scheduled to participate in the Invitational but Maryland and Pennsylvania withdrew from the tournament.

Temple, under the direction of third-year head coach Bill Mannino, returns to action October 18-19 at the Big Five Championship to be played at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.
