WEBB TALLIES TWICE TO LEAD TEMPLE MEN'S SOCCER TO FIRST-EVER A-10 TOURNAMENT WIN
11.13.03 | Men's Soccer
"This a tremendous win for the program," stated Temple coach David MacWilliams. "But it is just the first step. We have a lot more work to do this weekend."
Webb, who leads Temple with 11 goals on the season, deflected a pass in the box from freshman midfielder Ryan Heins in the ninth minute for the game's first goal. Heins made a nice individual effort, carrying the ball on a long run down the right side before finding Webb in front of the goal.
The game remained scoreless the remainder of the first half as neither team was able to mount much of an offensive effort due to the extreme cold and winds that reached as high as 25 miles per hour. Finally, in the 83rd minute, Webb made a nice individual play on a ball in front of the net and fired his second goal of the game past GW keeper Derek Bliss (one save).
Temple keeper Patrick Hannigan, who was named the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year the previous night, posted his ninth shutout of the season to tie the Owl single season record held by Jeff Kraft (three times, 1978, 1979, 1980). Hannigan made three saves on the night, but his first, a point blank stop off the foot of GW's Steve Brown in the game's fourth minute set the tone for the Owl defense.
Temple ups its record to 13-5-2 on the season while George Washington ends the year at 7-11-2.
