TEMPLE FALLS TO SAINT JOSEPH'S, 1-0, IN MEN'S SOCCER

11.8.03 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA - In a classic Philadelphia Soccer seven match, Saint Joseph's topped Temple 1-0 on a bitter cold Saturday night under the lights at Finnesey Field. The loss dropped Temple to 11-5-2 overall and 7-3-1 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. The Owls finish third in the A-10 Standings and will play the sixth-place team, George Washington, on Thursday, November 13 at 5:30 p.m. in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at the University of Richmond.

On a night when SJU honored its 10 seniors, it was a trio of fourth-year performers, Matt James, Adam Duffy and Pat Mondile that combined to tally the game's only goal late in the second half. Mondile picked up the ball in the midfield and played a crisp ball to the flag, where Duffy one-timed a cross to James, who slammed the ball into the back of the net in the 73rd minute.

The Owls increased the pressure late and had several opportunities to score in the waning minutes, but Hawk netminder Chris DiStephano made a key stop and several other Owl chances fluttered wide of the mark.

Temple goalkeeper Patrick Hannigan turned aside seven shots and actually had an opportunity to score the winning goal after pushing forward in the final seconds in an attempt to tie the score.

TU held slim advantages in shots, 13-12, and corner kicks, 4-2. The Hawks commited 20 fouls to just 13 for Temple.

Saint Joseph's (8-10-1, 5-5-1, A-10) ends its season tied for seventh in A-10 play. Temple now will play at Philadelphia University on Tuesday (2:00 p.m.) before departing for Richmond to compete in its first A-10 Tournament since 1993.
