WOMEN'S BASKETBALL DOWNS THE DUKES IN THE STEEL CITY TO EARN FOURTH WIN IN LAST FIVE GAMES

PITTSBURGH-Pittsburgh, Pa. - Temple (10-14, 6-7) captured its fourth victory in its last five games by defeating Atlantic 10 Conference foe Duquesne (13-11, 6-7), 77-44, at the A.J. Palumbo center on Thursday, February 20, 2003. The win was the Owls' fourth straight over the Dukes and upped TU's advantage to 20-10 in all-time meetings between the schools.

Stacey Smalls led all scorers with 21 points. Ari Moore (14) and Chrissy Cruz (10) were the other double figure scorers for the Owls. Christena Hamilton led Temple rebounders with six boards. Cruz and Tynecia Pam had five boards apiece.

The Dukes were held scoreless for the first four minutes of the second stanza as Temple extended its one-point halftime lead to 35-30 at 15:54 before the Dukes chipped away at the margin and got within a 39-37 reach on a three-pointer at 14:35. Temple proceeded to out-score the Dukes 23-5 over the next 7:38 for a 62-42 lead. Duquesne would only score two points the rest of the game.

Duquesne held a 35-33 rebounding edge, but shot .395 (17-43) for the game to the Owls'.484 (31-64). Temple held a huge advantage in turnovers as they forced 30 while committing 11. The Owls also won the steals battle 15-3.
